The new Smashing Pumpkins albums have been a long time coming

Billy announced today that The Smashing Pumpkins will be releasing 2 new guitar driven albums, Monuments To An Elegy and Day For Night, in 2015. So, let’s review what we’ve heard in the recent past about new SP compositions. But then again, we know from experience that the past isn’t always an indication of the future.

In August 2012, on a call with Rockline, Billy was asked (by yours truly :p) about the recent news that he had already started to write new music…

…to which Billy responded that he already had a name for the new album picked out. So, it’s entirely possible that one of these names has been sitting around since August 2012.

20120914-billy-corgan-02-x600-1347632261In September 2012, Billy again said he was working on new music, telling MTV Hive, “I’m starting to write new songs for the next Pumpkins album… I got a lot going on. I have a title for the next album but I won’t tell. It’s going to be a cruel record. Vengeance is mine.”

And then yet again, Billy spoke about writing new music in November of 2012 in an interview with ColumbusAlive.com, saying, “I’m gonna be demoing some new songs for hopefully what would be a Pumpkins album somewhere down the road. So I’ve been up all morning kind of tweaking some of the ideas before we go in and record them.”

Later, in December 2012, Billy told Sound Magazine, “Actually, we’ve talked about making a triple album—not with this current album—but the next one. We started talking about what that would mean. I would like to do another big work, but that just takes so much energy and commitment. It just takes over your life.”

In that same month, we also got to talk to Billy, where he mentioned the next album yet again (1:00-2:25).

Then, things went quiet up until March 2013, when Billy tweeted, “Excited to announce today’s our 1st official day of writing for new SP album. Wish us luck!”

In April 2013, Billy told 93 XRT’s Terri Hemmert that he was considering releasing two albums at once (3:25).

He floated the idea that one that would be “focused on the world that needs everything to be perfect and maybe one that’s more raw and done the old way.”

Billy_Corgan_CNN_TAThings went quiet again as The Smashing Pumpkins went on tour supporting Oceania in the southern US and in Europe. However, towards the end of the tour, when Jeff was asked if the band was working on a new album, he replied, “We have to start the process of a new album. Doing something as good as Oceania won’t cut it. It has to be exponentially better. We might be in the studio for five years. We’re in no hurry.”

When the Oceania tour was over in August 2013, we had the opportunity to speak with Billy once again and revisit the question of the future of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Billy’s response was, “There is still plenty of Smashing Pumpkins music to be made.”

A few weeks later, in mid September, Billy tweeted that he was working on two new albums. We received our first taste of new music from Billy just under 2 weeks later when he played billy_wgn_2013Freedom Rider.

The topic of a new album(s) didn’t come up again until February 2014, when, on his newly created Facebook page, Billy posted that he was writing new SP songs (along with a picture of him with a guitar in hand).

Just a few days ago, Billy posted that he and Jeff were working on new Smashing Pumpkins tracks.

Billy has also recently been performing live experimental music using synthesizers, which seems to be unrelated to the new Smashing Pumpkins music that is to come out.
