Written on May 16th 2007, and played by Billy Corgan alone during the Smashing Pumpkins 2007 residency shows, the track “I’m Doing The Best I Can” was performed for the 1st time on the 3rd day at the Orange Peel, and for the last time on the last day of the residency at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Bringing its total of live performances to 2.
In the If All Goes Wrong documentary, Billy talks about the song. He says that a friend of his came over to help him pack for tour and she was doing something very poorly and Billy told her he should of done that. She then responded with, ‘well, I’m doing the best i can’. Billy found it to be funny, so he playfully mocked her by singing the lyric, ‘I’m doing the best I can’ over and over as a joke. But when Billy played the song for the last time in San Francisco, it was no longer a joke. He felt the song was an exact statement of how he was feeling at the time.
Below is our own footage from that last performance in San Francisco.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C6YB3gGoUs]
