I of the Mourning is the 4th track on the Smashing Pumpkins’ album Machina. It was released as a promotional single in 2000.
On the Machina interview CD, Billy notes about this song “It is about the radio but it’s about things much grander than the radio. The radio being thee analogy i use to put across other ideas…” He later explained in the interview that I of the Mourning used to be two songs, one called Radio and the other I of the Mourning. It was referred to as I of the Radio. There were at least 5 or 6 different versions of the songs with 5 or 6 of different arrangements. Flood had suggested letting the song become a b-side but Billy couldn’t let it go because it had a certain draw.
The song has been played live over 120 times. Below is a rare, live, full band acoustic performance.
When invited to play David Letterman in April of 2000, the band chose to play I of the Mourning. It is unknown if the song was ever anticipated to be a single.
The song was played twice in 2013 during the Smashing Pumpkins last US tour.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zhu0Xk13v10]
