25 years of D’arcy

It was 25 years ago today that the Smashing Pumpkins would play their 1st live show with their new bassist, D’arcy Wretzky. She would end up being the band’s bassist until her sudden departure during the Machina sessions.

D’arcy was invited to try out for the band after her famed argument with Billy Corgan.

She was a vocal member on or off the stage, and in the studio. Billy Corgan once said “D’arcy was probably the person in the band with the highest taste. It doesn’t mean I agreed with everything she listened to but she had a very… almost snobby taste about music and it was D’arcy who often times would say  ‘no, that’s too cheesy’,  ‘no, that’s too lame’ and her opinion carried a lot of weight in the band…. there was time where she absolutely steered the direction of the band left when it was easily going to go right.”

During her first show (according to splra.org) she said “I wanna thank everybody who came out tonight, all my friends and my sister. ” and at her last performance she expressed frustration that James wouldn’t dance with her. James noted he had yet to perfect his swing dancing skills to which she replied “yeah yeah, I knew you’d have a good excuse”.

D’arcy has since stepped quietly out of the music scene and into the night, so this one goes out to D’arcy and for her years of service to the band.
