Flashback Friday: the 666 video

With the recent reissues of Gish and Siamese Dream , we’ve now been given a taste of what kind of material we can expect on the bonus discs included with the band’s remastered albums. As we head into 2012, we can expect a Pisces Iscariot reissue, which is slated for an April 2012 release. Perhaps more anticipated however is the upcoming reissue of the Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. So what exactly can we look forward to; will there be one disc of bonus material? Two discs? There is obviously no shortage of extra material, as is evidenced by the subsequent release of The Aeroplane Flies High, and the “Pastichio Medley” which features 73 snippets of additional tracks that did not make the album’s final cut. And then there are hours and hours of additional footage, some of which later surfaced and is now known as the 666 video.

So what exactly is this 666 video? In 1995, a crew from MTV went into the Pumpkins’ rehearsal space to film footage for their upcoming “Rockumentary” on the band. As the story goes, one of the MTV cameramen was fired and, upon his departure, left with his footage from the session at Pumpkinland. While the “Rockumentary” itself used various camera angles and included footage not used in the 666 video, the leaked footage, clocking in over 75 minutes, offers a rare glimpse into the Pumpkins’ creative process at the time. The leaked video includes rehearsal footage from released and unreleased songs, and includes snippets of early versions of the following tracks:

The Boy

Where Boys Fear to Tread

The Viper

Tribute to Johnny

Porcelina of the Vast Oceans

X.Y.U.

Zero, including a “drum & bass” version, and a more bluesy version

Thru the Eyes of Ruby

The Black Rider

The Tracer

Cupid de Locke

At this point, it is still a mystery what will be included on Mellon Collie‘s reissue scheduled for 2012 – though Billy recently tweeted about finding full versions of “Zoom” and “Knuckles”, and a live version of “Towers of Rabble”.  As we eagerly await Mellon Collie‘s reissue, here’s some behind the scenes footage for you to enjoy!
