Flashback Friday! THE WORLD IS A VAMPIRE!

Today is the greatest day no more-. Bullet with Butterfly Wings has just VERY recently beaten out Today as the most commonly live song performed by Smashing Pumpkins according to SPFC.org records (Today / BWBW). Of course it is very possible that from some of the unknown setlist that Today may still be the reigning champ. But for now lets tell Bullet that it’s the chosen one.

In a Guitar World from January of 1997 Billy is quoted to say “Believe it or not, the original riff from this song came to me during one of the Siamese Dream recording sessions. Somewhere, I have a tape of us from 1993 endlessly playing the ‘world is a vampire’ part over and over. But it wasn’t until a year and a half later that I finished the song, writing the ‘rat in the cage’ part on an acoustic guitar at the BBC studios in London on the same day that ‘Landslide’ was recorded.”

The song has been covered by Frida SnellJim Carrey and by random people who post there versions on YouTube.

So in its over 550+ known live perforamces I bring you my favorite era of the song along with links to different ones through out the years since the World was first declared to be a vampire!

  1. The 1995 performance is from the french musical TV show Taratata (still aired every other week).
I’m surprised (and pleased !) to see there’s a Youtube version of that one because France television has the videos removed regularly.

  2. the ’95 version sounds the most passionate. it’s like they’re still feeling it out as a live song. by ’97 they start doing versions that are fun for them but less so for (much of) the crowd. but I think the 2011 version has a nice mix of these strategies, with the slight tease at the beginning but then the full force of the original (’95 version) blasting off. rock on.
